Downtown finally has its flagship grocery store. Whole Foods Market officially opened Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and I stopped by today to see what all the buzz is about — here’s the full rundown.
A Grand Opening Worth the Wait
The new store sits at 201 W. A Street, San Diego, CA 92101, at the base of the Torrey residential tower near Little Italy. At roughly 45,400 square feet with a dedicated customer parking garage underneath, it’s one of the largest grocery openings downtown has seen in years — and it shows. The store is open daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Walking in today, the first thing I noticed was how well organized everything is. Wide aisles, clear signage, and staff everywhere ready to help. And it was already buzzing — full of local residents stocking up and employees from nearby offices grabbing lunch.
The Building: Torrey Tower at 201 W. A Street
The store occupies the ground floor of the Torrey residential tower, a fitting home for a market of this scale. The location — steps from Little Italy and the Cortez Hill corridor — puts a full-service grocer within easy reach of thousands of downtown residents who have been waiting years for exactly this.
Inside the Store: Highlights
- Local goods: 1,500+ products from 450+ California suppliers, including 40 local breweries and 110 local wineries.
- Food & drink stations: full coffee and juice bar, hot food and salad bars, fresh sushi, pizza, and sandwich counters.
- Fresh departments: extensive organic and conventional produce, full-service meat and seafood counters, and an in-store bakery.

Prime Member Deals Are the Real Story
Here’s what surprised me most: prices are actually pretty decent — especially with a Prime membership. Tuesday and Friday Prime member specials include freshly made sushi at buy one, get the second 50% off, pizza by the slice, or whole pizzas for just $12, plus plenty more rotating deals.
